Artist's Comments

On March 13 I attended the 2009 Avalon Airshow Friday flying display. I will be attending on the 14th as well. These pictures were taken by me and I wish to share them with you, because although I am mainly here on DA to exhibit my art and written works, my first passion in life was always aircraft.

This aircraft is one of the highlights of the Airshow. This Lockheed Super Constellation, affectionately known as Connie, is painted in QANTAS livery and has been a mainstay at the airshow for many years. Its peculiar thin, cigar-like fuselage, three tails and long landing gear only add to its gracefulness when it takes to the skies. It was originally salvaged from an aircraft boneyard in Arizona where it was only a shell of what it is today.

Connie did not fly on the Friday display due to worsening weather conditions, however it did several takeoff runs to display a distinctive feature - the jets of fire that burn brightly from its engine exhausts in the dark. When it does fly, however, this gentle giant impresses young and old alike by demonstrating the true grace of 1950s commercial passenger flight.

This is the last image from the Friday display. I hope to have more to show when I attend Saturday's all-day display!

Ahh, old propeller planes. I've seen a few of those before they'll begin to get replaced by jet engines. Well, it'll become obsolete one day, after all, like the diskette, it's already obsolete today when its past is glorious. :)

The Connie! My all-time favorite aircraft. There's one that lives out in Camarillo, California, which I used to pass regularly when I lived out there.

i lived in Tucson AZ in the late 90's and drove past the boneyard twice a day. It's like a cross between a junkyard and a museum..... amazing old stuff sitting out there, often in pieces, basically just in case the AF needs a spare part or something.

I even remember seeing one a lot like this.... wonder if it's the same one?

It wouldn't have been because this aircraft was salvaged in the 1960s.

There aren't very many left in the world which is why it's such a joy to not only see them up close but to also see them fly.

Yes, quite a few. Unfortunately a lot of them will be either scrapped or exploded.
